San Juan Island, Washington
Nestled in the San Juan Islands, just a few hours from Seattle, San Juan Island is the archipelago's second-largest island and one of my favorite places to visit. Home to Roche Harbor, local farms, cattle country, Cattle Point, American Camp, and plenty of charming shops, restaurants, and bars, there’s always somewhere new to explore.
Summer days are long here, with late sunsets and endless opportunities to get outside. Whether you’re spending the day on the water, exploring the island, or watching the sunset at Cattle Point, San Juan Island always feels a little slower and more special. Here are my recommendations for what to do and where to go:
Getting There
The easiest way to get to San Juan Island is by ferry from Anacortes. If you’re looking to skip the drive and ferry, you can also fly in with Kenmore Air.
Where to Stay
Roche Harbor — For a classic resort experience, Roche Harbor is a beautiful option with everything you need for a relaxing island getaway.
Friday Harbor House — Located right in town, this is a great option if you want to be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the harbor.
Lakedale Resort — Tucked into the middle of the island, Lakedale offers a little bit of everything, from a traditional lodge to yurts and camping.
Snug Harbor — One of my favorite options for a more secluded stay, with beautiful cabins right on the water.
There are also plenty of great Airbnb and vacation rental options throughout the island if you’re looking for something a little more private or homey.
Drinks & Dining
OysterTale — A great spot for oysters and drinks when you want something casual and local.
Westcott Bay Oysters — One of my favorite places on the island. They have great food and wine with outdoor seating right on the bay. If you can, make a reservation ahead of time!
Friday Harbor House — A great choice for a nicer meal, especially if you can snag a spot outside. The patio has fire pits and blankets, making it especially cozy in the evening.
San Juan Island Brewing Co. — A classic island stop for a beer and a casual meal.
San Juan Bakery — A must-visit for lunch. Just note that they’re only open Monday–Friday, so plan accordingly.
Things to do
E-bike to Cattle Point + American Camp — One of my favorite ways to explore the island. Bike out to Cattle Point and spend some time exploring American Camp along the way.
Lime Kiln Point State Park — Head to the lighthouse and walk along the shoreline for beautiful views of the water. It’s also known as a great spot for whale watching, so keep an eye out for orcas.
Hike American Camp or Mount Young — Both are great options if you want to get outside and take in some of the island’s incredible scenery.
San Juan Vineyard — Stop by for a tasting and, if you’re lucky, catch their live music on Saturdays.
Get on the Water — If you have the opportunity to whale watch, kayak, fish, or crab, do it. Being out on the water is one of the best parts of visiting San Juan Island. Orcas are often in the area, and the views are incredible.
King’s Market — Stop in here for information on fishing and crabbing licenses, plus a fun selection of local goods and supplies.
Shops & Take-Home Favorites
Dear Hazel — A must-stop if you love fashion. They have a great selection of clothing and accessories.
San Juan Island Sea Salt — A great place to pick up a little something to take home from the island. Their salts also make an easy and unique trip gift.
